Team Update

The final day of my trip was also Dia de Los Madres (mother’s day) and the birthday of Antony, one of my sponsored children. We all sang happy birthday to Antony before going to class. I expected it to be a routine day, but they had a surprise for me.  The teachers all thanked me for coming and what my visit has meant to the children.  The children had songs and dances prepared for me.  Afterwards, we took a picture together and I received hugs

Team Update!

Today the children had oral exams in English class.  It fills my heart with pride to listen to my sponsored children speak English as well as Spanish. Lunch was chicken soup with the children, a meal that my friends helped pay for.  The soup was delicious, and I loved watching the children all eat together upstairs from their class rooms. After a little time trying to help translate some writing to English  My mom and stepdad purchased their sponsored

Team Update – May 1st, 2018

After devotional today, I continued the morning routine helping in the English classes until lunch time.  After lunch I worked on copying some papers for the classes with the new scanner/copier/printer.  Then we headed over to Enma’s home to see the chicken co-op.   After some chit-chatting and pictures (and a few chickens thinking they would like to take my shoestrings away from me), I helped the girls build a gingerbread chicken co-op (an

Team Update – April 30th, 2018

Today the children at the school started with singing  the Guatemalan national anthem.  The devotional dealt with fraternidad between brothers (and sisters) and friends.  They sang a song which took me a moment to recognize as Barney the Dinosaur's “I love you, you love me” song.  After prayer they went to class. I went to help Jose the English teacher again. After getting pictures with my sponsored children last week, I printed a copy of

Team Update – April 29th, 2018

After a day off on Saturday, today was the big day - the reason I had to make this trip for May of this year.  Today we celebrated Enma’s quinceanera. We arrived at the Centre of Hope early in order to get pictures and prepare for the celebration.  Seeing Enma in her dress was amazing.  It made her look like a princess from a fairytale.  We took some pictures and sat talking while we waited for the setup to be ready.  Enma gave me a picture

Mission Accomplished

Loving Arms would like to Thank you for all your hard work. In a short amount of time you have accomplished a lot and made a huge difference.  We look forward to your return.  Please see the last blog below.   We arrived home on Sunday to snow and ice.  What a difference from the beautiful temperate climate of the Guatemalan mountains.  Our last two days in Guatemala now seem a blur.  On Friday, we made our last stop at the ferreteria and

Day 4- Water Water Water

We stopped at the ferreteria again yesterday and we will need to stop there again today. They definitely recognise us when we walk in, especially the security guard and his shotgun. We finished off the water lines yesterday. We had to wait to do a water test until the afternoon when the kids had finished school as the bathrooms were on the same line as the school. We need to shut down the line to tie the new line in. When we turned the water back

Day 3 – We need to work on our Spanish!

Yesterday on our way to the Loving Arms site, we stopped at a local hardware store, a terrestrial, for some parts. At first, we had to explain to Minor that we wanted to go there. Mynor doesn't speak English and we don't speak Spanish. So we got out our Google translate and gave it a shot. Sure enough we got the message through. The terrestrial is like most hardware stores in the developing world, all of the parts are displayed on the wall. You either

Day 2- One we will not forget!

Yesterday is a day I am not likely to forget for a long time. We moved out to the Loving Arms Centre like normal. Our objectivewas to complete the cementing. As we began to prepare the trenches for cement, Alicia (the Loving Arms Guatemala Executive Director) came by with a request. While the plan didn't show it she wondered if we could rough in a spot for one more girl's toilet. This meant digging up what we had already prepared and she felt really
