Blog Update – Sunday, September 17th

Today was a heavenly day. We began with a visit to Valhalla Macadamia Nut Farm. In Viking mythology, Valhalla is akin to paradise or a heavenly home. The farm lived up to its name being both beautiful and peaceful -- a wonderful place for the team to rejuvenate after our first 3 days of travel and work. It was also very educational. Who knew that the Macadamia Nut tree flowers and produces fruit at the same time; or that it converts twice as

Team Blog – Update 2

We are almost in the middle of the team's week here and the hard work continues. On Wednesday, the team continued with the fence. They also packaged the food that will be distributed. Other members continued helping with sorting the school supplies for our 61 children at school. Our new shelving is looking great and almost finished. After lunch the team left to go to Parrojas for the January food distribution. During the distribution they helped

Weekly Summary – Week of November 15, 2015

It has been a really wonderful week here in Guatemala! Every day has been full of new, different experiences. At the beginning of the week, I began going with Alejandra, the Child Sponsorship Director, to interview children for Preschool 2017. All of these children are three years old, and the hope is that we will be able to find sponsors for them soon so that they can begin receiving monthly food packages until they start school. These 20 children

Friday, June 19, 2015 – Day 6

Hola from team Shredder! What an amazing day here. Our first clinic was in the mountains of Paraxaj and Chitaburuy at the school house. We saw many children today and even had time to fly kites, play paper airplanes and jump rope with them. The kids were so happy to be with us, and little Cindy was such a gem dancing with us. In the afternoon we went to Los Llanos where we set up clinic in the local basketball court. It was 35 degrees and a tad

June 18, 2015 – Day 5

Today started with fresh toast and fresh fruit and then we hopped on the bus to Parrojas where we treated 140 people. We were set up in a church at the top of a mountain. This is the highest village we will be going to! Amazing view but you can certainly feel the high altitude. After lunch we headed to Chitaburuy and set up at the school. We have been blessed with 3 wonderful translators, Iris, Monica and Jonathan, they are a wonderful addition

April 13, 2015 – Day 1

Greetings from the rooftop of El Antaño Hotel.  It is now 6:20pm local time and we are reflecting back over this day. So wonderful awaken early this morning to the sounds of birds chirping and church bells ringing and the noticeable absence of the rooster crowing. Its so nice to return to enjoy the Guatemalan coffee.  After our coffee wake up we toured two mountain villages that Loving Arms serves - Chitaburuy and Paraxaj. We were able to interact

Many thanks to Leaders Meghan and Brian

Loving Arms appreciates the hard work that this team put forth during their stay in Guatemala. As most of you know it is our hope that a new school will open in January 2016 at our Centre of Hope. This team worked diligently and willingly to complete the second section of the cement security wall. Hopefully all the walls will be completed this year as other teams come to Guatemala to help. Not only did this work include mixing the cement (by hand)

For the first part of the morning we divided into four groups. One group went to the Elder’s Centre in Parramos. The centre for seniors is a drop-in centre. We saw and treated a total of 34 seniors. They can sit and socialize and receive a meal. The hours are from 8 am to 6 pm. The staff is very dedicated and attentive to the people dropping in. Another group went to Paraxaj. We set up our clinic in a school and saw and treated 38 people. At first

Thanks to Betty and Her Team!

Well the East-meets-West group had a great week. Some of these people met each other for the first time but all seemed to gel and a great deal of work was accomplished. 32 suitcases of donations were sorted and stored. Items ranged from school supplies to clothes to building materials and supplies for co-ops. The team taught sewing lessons (making a small purse) to women from Chitaburuy. The women from La Hermita were given a lesson introducing

October 27, 2014 – Day 2

Today, sewing classes commenced in the wonderful new sewing room at the Centre of Hope. Grace and Barb enjoyed meeting an advanced sewing group from Chitaburuy in the morning and a beginner's class from La Hermita in the afternoon. How welcome we felt. Grace was excited to greet and hug women she had taught in March, 2012. The morning group began working on a new design of a small change purse. Each of the women chose their own combination of colour
