Blog Update – Monday, September 18th

Today we began taking medical clinics into the surrounding villages. It was quite an adventure. The morning clinic was to be held at a church which sits at the edge of a cliff in La Hermita. Unfortunately for a variety of reasons, and despite a back-up plan, we could not get a key to the church and so after an hour of waiting, the team ended up holding the clinic in the community leader’s house amidst chickens and hanging laundry. Fortunately,

¡Gracias, Feliz Navidad y Welcome!

Thank You: We want to express our most sincere gratitude for our recent team from Mississippi State University. In one short week, the team accomplished many wonderful tasks that will continue impacting the families of Guatemala for many years. Aside from working with the 40 children from our school throughout the week, the team built a room in the Centre of Hope where the women’s co-ops will be able to sell their products, hosted a VBS at the

Monday, June 15 – Day 2

Day 2 was amazing. We started our day off with omelettes and fresh fruit, then off to La Hermita where we saw 126 villagers. We treated everything from worms, respiratory problem, skin problems and so much more. What a rewarding experience and everyone was so grateful. On our way to our second clinic we had people following us in our pick up so we pulled over and set up clinic from the back of our tailgate. We saw 80 people there. There were so

December 17, 2014 – Day 3

Today our team split into two groups for the first half of the day: one group went to the Elder's Center and the others went back to the Center of Hope! At The Elder's Center, we helped the men and women braid headbands out of t-shirt scraps.  Then we helped them make bracelets with beads. We also had the opportunity to tell them the story of how Jesus washed His disciples' feet, and we were able to wash their feet as a way to honor them. This was

November 11, 2014 – Day 3

For the first part of the morning we divided into four groups. One group went to the Elder’s Centre in Parramos. The centre for seniors is a drop-in centre. We saw and treated a total of 34 seniors. They can sit and socialize and receive a meal. The hours are from 8 am to 6 pm. The staff is very dedicated and attentive to the people dropping in. Another group went to Paraxaj. We set up our clinic in a school and saw and treated 38 people. At first

November 4th, 2014 – Day 1

Yesterday Cynthia and I were joined by Steven Hash who arrived from North Carolina to be here for 15 days. After an evening of getting to know one another, we enjoyed another great night of sleep. Today Cynthia and I were on duty arranging the kitchen for the bakery, cooking and preserves co-op. It is a beautiful kitchen but disorganized and needed some TLC. We also noticed some much needed items for the kitchen to help the co-ops with their work.

Thanks to Betty and Her Team!

Well the East-meets-West group had a great week. Some of these people met each other for the first time but all seemed to gel and a great deal of work was accomplished. 32 suitcases of donations were sorted and stored. Items ranged from school supplies to clothes to building materials and supplies for co-ops. The team taught sewing lessons (making a small purse) to women from Chitaburuy. The women from La Hermita were given a lesson introducing

October 30, 2014 – Day 5

An amazing Thursday in Guatemala! The team split into little groups and achieved much today. The home the team built is now painted! Tomorrow the furniture goes in! The children were given new shoes and their smiles were huge when they saw them! A mat was put on the ground for them to colour, then put their shoes back on when finished. When the group arrived in the morning to start, the mom had put up two small Canadian flags on either side of the

Today, sewing classes commenced in the wonderful new sewing room at the Centre of Hope. Grace and Barb enjoyed meeting an advanced sewing group from Chitaburuy in the morning and a beginner's class from La Hermita in the afternoon. How welcome we felt. Grace was excited to greet and hug women she had taught in March, 2012. The morning group began working on a new design of a small change purse. Each of the women chose their own combination of colour

June 30, 2014 – Day 20

Today was a Holy Day in Guatemala, but Pablo and I travelled to La Hermita for English classes.  We had three little boys come and we had class. After an hour we took a break to play and other children came.  We resumed classes with about 15 children in all.  What a wonderful treat to spend the morning with them.  They were glad to hear that we would be back with the church on Saturday!  The Center was quiet most of the day.  I began packing
